Company Blog - Web Stuff

Hey everyone - we put out an English copy of the plugin for the google button.  Just put { googlebutton } without the spaces somewhere in your site and the button will show up.

Thanks!

Exciting stuff!  Nooku server is on github and is looking good..

If you haven't used git, google how to install 'git' - then:

# git clone https://github.com/nooku/nooku-server.git

We installed it with no issues, just like a Joomla 1.5.22 install.

Multi-sites is coming any day now, the current version didn't have it - but take a look at the installation screens and back end admin.

We've studied landing pages for quite a while, and even after compiling a lot of knowledge on the subject it can be hard to convey what actually needs to be done to your site.  The guys over at kissmetrics.com have nailed it with this infographic.

We'll permalink to them - but we saved a copy of the graphic in case theirs ever comes down.. it's that good.

When we start an online marketing engagement for your business, one of the 10~ sections we'll cover is a landing page.  After all the on-page optimization, and link building, and other goodies your site needs - people need a super optimized page to be sent to that drives them to perform an action.  That is a landing page.

"A super-optimized page that you send visitors to which will drive them to a specific action of your choosing"

Merry Christmas everyone - we just changed all our SOBI2 templates to be free downloads.  We'll also try to support you in using them in our forums.

We appreciate the subscribers we got - and they will get preferential treatment when we starte SOBI Pro templates.

Interesting read, I didn't realize google ever offered so much transparency on these types of subjects.

What I would take away from this is, like in your personal credit report(FICO score) - the more negative things add up, they will tip the scale.  One bad thing mixed with a lot of good, still will show you worthy of a search result.

More bad than good could bump you down the results in a significant way.

here is the whole article --

I just wanted to place a copy of this here, it's SOOO relevant - and we explain it so frequently.. just in case some day our site is up and his isn't :)

I thought a number of folks would like to hear about this since a good chunk of our clients have localized businesses.  Our friends over at Dr PC Fix were having a grand opening in Bellevue for Computer Repair and were looking for a way to drive some people to the store.  We thought it would be a good time to try out a facebook ad.

Backlinks are links from someone, to you.  Links to you are a MAJOR way that search engines calculate how good your website content is.  How good your website content looks is what a search engine calls relevance.  Engines want to show the most relevant site to their users.

  • Thanks to the contrivances of scammers, sploggers, and link farmers, it’s not enough to just have a high number

URL structure and friendly navigation can make some of the biggest difference in your site getting indexed and getting points.

In the old days a dynamic site had to use dynamic query URLs like: http://www.sylviatrager.com/cgi-bin/fh1_2.cgi?Autoincrement=195

That told the site to execute that .cgi file, and show record number 195.  Not very pretty.  And, completely meaningless to the search engine.

Current Content Management Systems (CMS) like Joomla, wordpress, and others; allow you to use Search Engine Friendly (SEF) URLS like ours shown in the image to the left.

Google local is the place to be when someone is trying to find your business.  They put you on the map for the customer, they can see instantly how close you are to them.  They put your number of reviews there, your phone number, and your website.  This all feeds from your "Google Places" profile.

Hey world - hopefully this helps other hosts out there, we just learned of a spam hack that took place - although the holes aren't completely patched I have a good temporary workaround until we can do more research.  This hack is brand new, involves Joomla sites, and a file called writedoor2.php.

Here are some files you'll see in every Joomla installation if you are vulnerable:

/home/USERNAME/public_html/modules/footer_t.php
/home/USERNAME/public_html/modules/defaults.php
/home/USERNAME/public_html/modules/mod_mainmenu/extra/
     extra/feed3.php  extra/index.php  extra/mi.php  extra/writedoor2.php

The easy to find file is writedoor2.php, mi.php, or footer_t.php.

These files combine to insert code at the top of your site with links to hidden menu items on YOUR site that are full of spam link html files.  The link will probably be at the top of the page, visible with a view-source.

As a workaround, if you don't want to restore hundreds of sites to backups on a whim - I came up with a very basic workaround.

Be sure you understand ROOT access and the console.  Do NOT break your server and complain on forums.  If you want my help you can call our office and ask for Troy.

Microsoft has signed the contributor agreement for Joomla, one of the biggest PHP-based open-source applications.

Josh Holmes, a UX Architect Evangelist with Microsoft, has more about the arrangement on his blog:

“Obviously it means that Microsoft employees can contribute to Joomla!. That’s exciting all by itself as Joomla! is the second largest PHP application in the world. In fact, that’s already happened in conjunction with the signing as Ruslan Yakushev and Don Raman have already contributed code to add WinCache support to Joomla!“

Joomla is a content-management system (CMS) and a Model View Controller (MVC) framework that evolved from the Mambo CMS. Joomla is licensed under Version 2 or later of the GNU General Public License (GPL). According to the Joomla site, Joomla’s customers include MTV Networks Quizilla, IHOP, Harvard University and Citibank.

We put out a new template for real estate complete with google maps, contact form, and twitter widget.  You can watch an installation video here to see how to install and configure it.  You can also get support in our forum!
